New Year 2012

Happy New Year to all out there.
I was flicking through a few photos over the Christmas and came across this one from New Hampshire.
The new year has brought a few bookings and I hope more, the weather last year was not the best but we live in hope.
Those of you thinking of booking you can either ring or text 087 2213900 to make an enquiry.
Because of the lean times we live in I’m willing to hold my prices this year.
A full day fishing, group 8+ €60 per person. Single double booking €70 pp.
Remember I want you to have a
‘free day out’ by taking your catch home for the freezer. I saw this week at the local supermarket Cod at €18 per kilo, wow !
Again guys keep thinking fair weather for the year and I hope to see you all back in Dingle.
Nearly forgot I have a great arrangement with a few of the B&B’s in Dingle, I can offer you 1 overnight B&B + a full day’s fishing at €95 per person if you have 4 or more travelling.

Christmas

We have had the windiest year on record and November & December were no exceptions. But the forecast is for milder air for Christmas and hopefully the Minus tempratures are behind us.
Happy Christmas to all and a good New Year, I will have news as soon as we get back fishing in the new Year.

November

Last Saturday was a very fine day with light NW winds. I had a mixed group Slovakians & English anglers joining them two ladies on their first fishing trip.

Fisher ladies.

The day started poorly with no fish for the first hour, the reason, the sea was churned up by the recent storms and was milky in the shallow areas under 15 fathoms. We moved towards Slea Head and the fishing improved, even got good with large pollack landed.
The swell was still lingering but the day was a sunny blue sky one, great to be out. The guys were going to cook the pollack for dinner, plenty for all to eat.
Since the change back to GMT the evening is short so we started back to Dingle.
At the harbour’s mouth a few boats were looking at Fungi our dolphin. He put on a great show with loops, spyhops and general playfulness it was great to see and the clients got some good video.
Next issue soon hopefully.
Rory.

October/November

Believe it or not, I was out fishing more times in October this year than in September. We had nice breaks in the weather and the fish were still biting even though harder to find. A few 18 inch Squid were the most unusual catches this month, these we caught on our last drift at about 5.00 pm. The same day we had big Cod, one was about 4/5 kg and of course I didn’t bring the camera that day to record it.
November has started with a bang it is now blowing about 100 kph from the South East but by Saturday it should have calmed down.
I have a few guys to go out the week end so I’ll report on the outing with photos.
We do not stop fishing for the winter, if the weather is good and you guys want to fish, I’m good to go.

A break at last !

The Ukraian Fishermen.

For the past 6 weeks as you kow there has been continious SW winds in excess of F5. Leading to very few days at sea but we had a few beaks. Four guys from the Ukraine braved a big Atlantic swell to fish. We had a good day with a nice variety of Cod Ling & Pollack, mackarel were scarce though. The Following week we were out again with more fishermen from the Eastern Block but now working in Kerry, they were accompanied by Des, David & Conor. The fog was as thick as it gets as we left the harbour making it difficult to navigate especially at high tide with big trawlers coming in to off load their catch. The fog stayed with us until afternoon but during it, with flat calm conditions, we were catching very good Ling, one over 4 kgs. At last to everyones delight we could see land from the boat but the change of tide brought a slackening in the catch.
David is a very keen fisherman and at his age he will become a well known name in the Angling Circles in the future. His Pollack was a fine fish that gave him a figh to remember.

This one I enjoyed “David”

on our way home with almost flat calm seas we were approached by a pod of Common Dolphins, they stayed and played with the boat for at least 10 minutes. Getting photos wasn’t easy but I got a few.

Our playmates in Dingle Bay

The dolphin show was a nice end to our day especially watching them jockying for position under the bow wave.[caption id=”attachment_237″ align=”aligncenter” width=”300″ caption=”Common Dolphins playing in the bow wave.”
Forecast for the wek is poor again but I will report on the next fishing day.

Stormy Weather

For the 3 weeks of september I got out 2 times to fish. Last year we had 20 days in September, but what the heck ! I was not the only one ‘in from’ the weather, the Spanish Tuna boats or Pole Boats as we call them were tied up in dingle for 2 weeks during the tail end of hurricanes from the Atlantic.
I took some time to do a little maintainance on the boat & gear.

Tuna Trollers Pole Boats

The sea was in a terrible state but facinating to look at during the height of the storms.

Stormy seas !

I promised you a few words on the fishing trip with Mike Thrussell & Mike Hennessy, I’m still waiting for the hpotos but I can tell you we/they caught a total of 14 Species in dingle Bay & Blasket Islands in the day out. This was as good as it gets, my best before this was about 10. The storms continus as I write but I’m hoping next week will bring a high pressure system over Ireland and we can enjoy calm days fishing next week.

Tralee Celtic FC

11 hardy fishermen from Tralee Celtic were out with me last Saturday. We had a good day with lots of good fishing. The day started a little breezy but it calmed to a F3 or less by afternoon.

Tralee Celtic FC, fishing division ?

Fish were plentiful with some good Cod

A fine Cod

Pollack were plentiful and big out on my favourite Wild Bank mark.

A good size Pollack on the 6/0 feathers.

What a well rounded day with plenty of laughs and good banter, even a Cuckoo Wrasse was named Nemo !

Nex week in fact Monday will be interesting, I will be joined by Mike Thrussell from World Fishing and Mike Hennessy from Kenmare two great international anglers. The forecast is for light winds, the day could be interesting, will tell all soon.

Your 1st Fish

Landing your 1st fish is a great event. For this young angler it was a struggle with this fine Cod.

My first fish, A big Cod'

The past week was an unusual one with a fierce sudden gale on Friday. This must have scattered the fish in Dingle Bay as the catch rate has been down. over the week end. Last week A bunch of ‘Jokers’ from BF Desmond Marine, Kinsale, fished on a bright Saturday afternoon. We had a lot of laughs including some unusuall ‘feathers’ fabricated no doubt at the eng. works in Kinsale, no names.

Feathers by Bart, Ray & Picasso !

That evening in the pub the fish got bigger and the feather fabricator was found out Ha Ha !
Yaan and friends were back on Sunday. Yaan & Co students at UCD returned to break Yaan’s record which he did.

My record 'so far' next one Bigger !

Again mid week is broken weatherwish but looking foreward to the week end and next week with an unusual guest Angler !!

Silly season !

They call this time of year the silly season on the water for a good reason. A lot of inexperienced ‘boaters’ go on the water during the holiday season, some invariably get onto trouble. Not my Guys & Gals though. We had a good week with people from different parts of the world. South Africa was represented by Leo’s group who insisted I hoist the S. African flag on the mast it drew a few comments in the pub later !

Leo's S. Africans

We are having good & bad weather but generally good. Fishing is patchy in places I found if we keep travelling we eventually find fish. Cod are in good supply and size as are Mackarel & Ling.

Mine is Bigger !!

North of Blackhead Sound has deep water but fine Pollack, up here the Atlantic Swell was big all the week but worth the effort.
Let’s see what next week brings.
